Welcome to 2009 Viking Lacrosse

5/26/09

Congratulations to seniors Jack Gibbs and Mason Carper for being selected to participate in the 4th annual “NC Great 38” All Star Lacrosse Game.

The game features the top seniors from North Carolina’s public and private schools and will be televised by Time Warner’s On Demand service (Chanel 1234).

  Date: Sunday, May 31, 2009
Time: Face Off at 6:00 PM
Location: Ardrey Kell High School Charlotte, NC

Tune in Sunday night to watch Jack & Mason represent NW lacrosse!

5/22/09

The Northwest Vikings played the First Annual Vikings Alumni Challenge, with the Vikings Varsity squad coached by John Gibbs, and taking on an excellent compilation of Vikings Alumni, coached by former Vikings Head Coach Bryan Heidi. The alumni played a great game, with several former players and coaches showing the 2009 Varsity team how the "old school" played the game. Attackman Tom Barbitta scored, as did several other alumni players, but the "new school" proved too much for the alumni and won the game handily by a score of 15-5.

See the game results and photos from the Alumni game here. Again, as has been the case throughout the season, proceeds from all print orders are donated directly to the NW Vikings Lacrosse Booster Club to benefit the Vikings Lacrosse program.

NW Viking Alumni Game - 5/22 @ 6:30 PM

The Northwest Lacrosse Boosters Club is pleased to announce the 1st Annual NW Viking Alumni game to be played this Friday night 5/22 at 6:30 pm at NWHS. The 2009 varsity team will be competing against a team of alumni players for bragging rights and a fun wrap up to the spring season.

Attention NW alumni: Please visit the Facebook group "NW Viking Lacrosse Alumni Game" for more details and to sign up.

5/13/09

The end of season lacrosse banquet is planned for May 20, 2009 at 7:30pm in the school cafeteria. Be sure to come to show your appreciation to the team for their winning season. Team awards will be announced, as will team captains for next year.

And don't forget, the end of season is here, so now is the time to look through the photos from each game this year (found by each game on the Schedule/Results page) and purchase photos of your favorite player(s). The photos will last a lifetime, but your player's lacrosse career at Northwest won't. Remember, all proceeds from photo sales are donated to the Lacrosse program, so every bit of your money is used to build next year's program.

5/11/09

The Northwest Vikings team played the quarter-finals tonight, going against the Chapel Hill Tigers, the best team in the state. The Tigers were surprised by the aggressive Vikings in the first quarter, drawing first blood and keeping it close, with the score tied at 3-3 at 5 seconds before the end of the quarter, when Chapel Hill scored, ending the quarter at 4-3. The second quarter had the Tigers going on a 5-0 streak, ending the half at 8-3. The Vikings fought hard, but couldn't keep up with the Tigers, and Chapel Hill ended the game with a win and a final score of 17-5. See the game results and photos here.

Remember, you can browse the season's photos from the schedule/results page, and can still order photos from any of the games for which photos were shot. These photos not only give you a lasting memory of your favorite player's best plays during this terrific season (one to be remembered...), but every dollar you spend on these prints will be donated directly to the Northwest Vikings Lacrosse Booster Club to benefit the lacrosse program! What better way to donate to the team, while still receiving such a valuable benefit!

It has been a great lacrosse season, and the Northwest Vikings have really excelled this year! Congratulations to all the boys, both on the JV as well as Varsity squads for one of the best seasons in recent history!

5/8/09

The second round playoffs will be Monday, May 11, 2009, at Chapel Hill (NOT East Chapel Hill) at 6:00pm. Directions are here. This is the #1 team in the state, so the Vikings will need our support to win and go on to the championship!

5/7/09

The Northwest Vikings team played the first game of the playoffs tonight after two nights of weather-related cancellations. The Grimsley Whirlies came ready to play, and kept the score close the entire game, even taking a 7-4 lead in the 3rd quarter. But the Vikings fought back, tying the game at 7-7, then finishing off the Whirlies with a final goal late in the 4th quarter to win a nail-biter by 8-7. Check the results and photos here.

No rest for the weary, however. The Vikings now move into the 2nd round of playoffs. The time and date are still TBD. They'll be playing East Chapel Hill, and as soon as I know when and where, I'll post it here and on the schedule page.

4/28/09

The Vikings JV team were back on top again today, with a win over Mt. Tabor by 9-3. The Northwest Varsity team struggled against a strong Mt. Tabor team, coming back from an early 4-1 deficit to tie the game at 5-5, but ultimately losing 8-10. Results and photos are here. We have another very challenging game coming up on Thursday when we take on the Reynolds Demons, but this time we're at home and the home crowd can help our team to victory. Get out there this Thursday to cheer your team on!

4/25/09

The Vikings JV team marked their first loss of the season today, by 4-9 against the Grimsley Whirlies. The Northwest Varsity team looked like they were going to run away with the game in the first half, with a score of 5-1 at halftime. But the Whirlies fought back, taking a 7-6 lead late in the game. The Vikings stayed strong throughout, and ended the game victorious at 10-8. Be sure to check out the photos and remember, prints are available for sale with the proceeds going directly to the lacrosse program. This is your way to donate, and you get a lasting memory as well!

4/19/09

The schedule has been modified somewhat. The home game against Western Alamance previously scheduled for Tuesday, 4/21/09, has been cancelled. Western Alamance needed to make up some weather-related cancellations in-conference, so our game was cancelled. Also, the home game against Reynolds from 3/17/09 has been scheduled for Thursday, 4/30/09. The boys had a good couple of wins over spring break in Wilmington -- let's be sure we do all we can to help them keep it going!

4/10/09

The Vikings took on the RJ Reynolds Demons last night, suffering a tough loss at the varsity level, but winning once again at the JV level. The JV team beat Reynolds by a score of 10-3, while the varsity team struggled, keeping it close but in the end, losing to the Demons by a score of 11-16. You can see the game results and photos of the varsity game here. I was not able to photograph the JV game.

The Vikings go to Wilmington next week to play two games during Spring Break. Please send your best wishes, and if any of you can accompany the team and help with their cheering section, it would be greatly appreciated!

4/7/09

The Vikings Lacrosse team continued its march toward the top with a pair of wins over West Forsyth on a cold, windy evening. The JV kept it close in the first half, leading with a half-time score of 1-0. But the scoring picked up in the second half, and the Vikings JV team beat West Forsyth by 6-4. The Varsity also kept it close during the first half, but did take a 7-4 lead at the half-way point. Again, in the second half, the Vikings took a commanding lead, finally winning by a score of 14-5. Thanks to all the fans for coming and supporting the team in the cold, windy April night.

See game results here. Please purchase prints, as they will provide a lasting memory of your favorite player, and the entire proceeds from the sale will be donated directly to the lacrosse team to help with their continued success.

4/3/09

Tonight was an historic night for the Northwest Vikings as they played the dominant Page Pirates. The JV team kept the score close throughout the entire game, ending regular play in a tie at 11-11. Sudden Death overtime brought the final battle, but without further scoring; thus, the game ended tied at 11-11. The Men's Varsity teams were very closely matched all night, keeping the score within 2-3 points in each quarter, and tied at halftime. But in the final quarter, the Vikings finished strong and pulled ahead to win by a 13-8 margin! Congratulations to the NW Vikings!

See game results here, and remember that by purchasing prints you will be donating directly to the Northwest Viking Lacrosse Team!

4/3/09

While I wasn't in town to capture the Northern and Southwest games in photos, I did update the web site with the scores (see the Schedule page). Please be sure to come to Page High School tonight to help the Northwest Vikings continue their winning season! This game will be a hotly contested contest, and the Vikings will need your support.

3/27/09

Tonight's scheduled game against Western has been cancelled due to the field conditions related to the weather. This game will be rescheduled for a later date.

3/25/09

Tonight's makeup game against Reynolds has been cancelled due to the field conditions related to the weather. This game will be rescheduled for a later date.

3/25/09

The NW Vikings took on the Mt. Tabor Spartans Tuesday night, in a strongly contested battle of will. The JV team came out on top by a 6-2 margin of victory, while the Varsity went into sudden death, finally succumbing to the Spartans 8-7 with 53 seconds remaining in overtime. See game results here, and remember that by purchasing prints you will be donating directly to the Northwest Viking Lacrosse Team!

3/20/09

The Vikings beat a very determined Grimsley team tonight, by close margins in both the JV and Varsity games. The NW Vikings JV team won by a slim margin of 9-8, while the Varsity team kept the suspense going all night long, finally holding off the Whirlies by a score of 10-9. See game results here, and remember that by purchasing prints you will be donating directly to the Northwest Viking Lacrosse Team!

3/13/09

The NW Vikings took on the Page Pirates tonight in the cold rain, taking an early lead at 2-1 in the first quarter, but ending the game down 8-14. See the results and the game photos here. Remember, you can purchase photos of your favorite player, get a memory that will last a lifetime, and know that all proceeds from the print sales go directly to the team! You can even order the prints on-line. Supporting your NW Viking Lacrosse program has never been so easy!

3/13/09

The JV game for tonight has been postponed, and the varsity game will begin at 6:00. Please remember to wear black, as this is our "Blackout Night", and it is up to everybody to help our team win (the team requested the Blackout attire, so let's try to help them out).

Also, concession workers scheduled for tonight's games are not needed for concessions. They are still needed to help CHEER for our team, however!!

3/11/09

For those of you who like the game photos on this site (from which, by the way, you can order prints and know that all proceeds will be donated to the NW Viking Lacrosse Team), but would like a more dynamic experience, check out the Lethal Lacrosse web site, published by Patrick Coyne. On the site you will find video highlights from hard-fought lacrosse games, along with other items of interest for lacrosse fans everywhere.

3/10/09

The Northwest Viking Lacrosse Team won their second game of the season, with both JV and Varsity dominating the West Forsyth Titans. The JV team took an early lead and maintained it through the end of the game, winning with a score of 10-7. The Varsity played well, moved the ball well and exhibited terrific teamwork, bringing home a dominating win at 17-2! It looks like the 2009 lacrosse season is off to a great start. The Vikings take on the Page Pirates on Friday, and this promises to be a VERY challenging game. Our team needs all the support for this one, so come out and help our Vikings chalk another win!! See the game results and a photo gallery from the game here or from the schedule/results page.

3/6/09

The Vikings won their season opener in dominating style, beating the Riverside Pirates 15-4. See the game results and a photo gallery from the game here or from the schedule/results page. Remember, if you purchase prints from the gallery, not only will you receive an archival quality print, but you will also be supporting the lacrosse team directly. ALL PROCEEDS from the print sales go to the Lacrosse Booster Club to support the team's needs. So buy lots of pictures -- it can be your way of donating to the team and helping them continue their great start to the season!

2/27/09

Lacrosse game concessions are a major fundraiser for the lacrosse team. The concessions stand is open at all home games for both JV and Varsity games, and it helps to fund the team for this year and next. This is a vital part of making our lacrosse team competitive at Northwest High School.

As the school season approaches, we are trying to fill all of our volunteer concessions spots. Please look at the volunteer schedule, note where there are still volunteer needs, and find any open spot to volunteer. During the chilly March and April evenings, the concession stand is a nice, warm spot from which to keep up with the game and help out the fans and the team all at the same time. All parents, please find a spot to volunteer!

You can e-mail Kim Ireland, our concessions coordinator, directly to volunteer.

2/24/09

Important LAX Info from Coach Goldsmith

As our new 2009 Coach Mark Goldsmith shared with the team at the banquet, his expectation is to have our players playing together in the off season to improve. He has asked me to send out the attached information on several options he will be offering this summer through Old North State Lacrosse:

The summer program will begin TOMORROW night (Monday 19th) at Pilot Elementary School. Practice runs from 6:00pm to 9:00pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. He will be running the program to work on skills, but you will also have the opportunity to try out for a travel team for several tournaments this summer. I have attached a brochure, application and information about the travel team. Bring the completed application with you to the first practice tomorrow night if you haven’t already sent it in. The Coach would like for you to get there early if you plan to turn in an application so that it doesn’t cut into practice time.

Also, the ONS Lacrosse Camp is one of NC’s best instructional summer camps and will again be run this summer at NC State. I have attached a camp brochure as well. If you decide to attend the camp in addition to the summer ONS program, he will extend a $100 discount.

If you have questions about either of these summer opportunities, please e-mail Coach Goldsmith directly.

Finally, Coach Goldsmith would like to hold a MANDATORY player/parent meeting before this school year is over. Please hold the date of Thursday May 29th at 7:00pm in the cafeteria open while we confirm with the school. I will be sending a follow up note on this later this week.

Thanks and we hope to have a HUGE group of NW players playing this summer!
